Stephen King’s Oldies…

Salem’s Lot….
I was browsing through Stephen King’s novels on Audible.com when I decided to read some oldies but goodies. I first discovered Stephen King back in around 1975 or 1976 and Salem’s Lot was the first one I read. Now it’s time to just sit back and listen to someone else tell me the unabridged story. The narrator of Salem’s Lot is Ron McLarty, one of my most favorites, who also narrates a lot of David Baldacci’s novels. I loved every minute of listening and had difficulty putting down my iPod. I really love this book.
In case you don’t remember the tale of Salem’s Lot, this is from the Publisher’s Summary:
“Stephen King’s second novel, Salem’s Lot, is the story of a mundane town under siege from the forces of darkness. Considered one of the most terrifying vampire novels ever written, it cunningly probes the shadows of the human heart and the insular evils of small-town America.”
If you like Stephen King and you like audiobooks, this one is a must.
The Shining…

Remember the first time you read The Shining by Stephen King? I do and I’ll never forget it. It was back in 1977 or 1978, shortly after the book came out in paperback. I couldn’t put it down and stayed up most of the night to finish it. I was working at the hospital back then and my shift started at 7:00 a.m. It was a winter night when I read the book and it was just barely getting light as I left the house to go to work. I was in kind of a rush that morning and hadn’t paid attention to the weather. When I opened the door to leave, I was shocked at seeing the ground blanketed with snow and the snow was still falling hard. All the rose bushes in the yard were covered. It was deathly quiet and the snow seemed to make slight whispering sounds as it fell to earth. A chill went up my spine as a clump of snow fell off one of the bushes close to me as I scurried down the walk to my car. I let out a yell and ran like hell. When I got to the car, my hands shook as I tried to get the key in the door, and I just about hyperventilating as I backed the car down the driveway. I was terrified and in a cold sweat.
Silly of me? Yes, but the mood that Stephen King created with The Shining still lives in those spine-tingling memories we all have when experiencing an excellent, well-written novel of this genre. Stephen King is the master.
Listening to the unabridged audiobook from Audible.com was another memorable experience. Although, nothing will ever come close to the spine-tingling experience I had when I first read The Shining, listening to Campbell Scott narrating came pretty close.
Audible Editor Reviews:
“Why You Should Download This Audiobook: For all its suspense and genuinely frightening passages, Stephen King’s best novel remains a shattering look at how alcoholism destroys a family. If you believe you know this novel only from watching Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation, it’s time to listen, and be surprised by the differences. The level of complexity King achieves in confronting two kinds of domestic terror, the supernatural kind he invents and the everyday one he himself channeled as a man whose mental stability was challenged by a drinking problem, is laudable.”

Publisher’s Summary:
“First published in 1977, The Shining quickly became a benchmark in the literary career of Stephen King. This tale of a troubled man hired to care for a remote mountain resort over the winter, his loyal wife, and their uniquely gifted son slowly but steadily unfolds as secrets from the Overlook Hotel’s past are revealed, and the hotel itself attempts to claim the very souls of the Torrance family. Adapted into a cinematic masterpiece of horror by legendary director Stanley Kubrick, featuring an unforgettable performance by a demonic Jack Nicholson, The Shining stands as a cultural icon of modern horror, a searing study of a family torn apart, and a nightmarish glimpse into the dark recesses of human weakness and dementia.”
